Dear Ms. Krider,
Thank you
for contacting me to express your support for net neutrality legislation.
I appreciate hearing your views on this important issue.

As you are
aware, a major point of contention in telecommunications reform is the question
of how to ensure unfettered access to the Internet. The argument to ensure equal
access and nondiscriminatory treatment by placing restrictions on owners of the
networks that compose and provide access to the Internet is referred to as “net
neutrality.” There is no single accepted definition of “net neutrality.”
However, most agree that any definition should include language preventing
owners of the networks from controlling how consumers lawfully use that network
and from discriminating against content provider access to that network.  I
believe this issue is of great importance to the future of the Internet and the
U.S. economy and that we must craft a balanced and responsible solution that
protects the individual rights of consumers and small businesses while
considering the concerns of providers.

The House Telecommunications and
the Internet Subcommittee Chairman, Ed Markey, a strong advocate of net
neutrality legislation, has included network neutrality among the topics the
Subcommittee will investigate in the coming months.  Currently, one bill is
pending which will preserve internet neutrality.  H.R. 5353, the Internet
Freedom Preservation Act, has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and
Commerce.  Although I do not serve on this Committee, you may be assured I
will continue to monitor this issue closely and keep your views close in
mind.

In the meantime, thank you for taking the time to share your views
with me.  Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future about this or
any other matter of concern.  If you would like to learn more about my work

Yarmuth
