You Need To Know.

Analysis by Richard Cowan

Welcome to
MarijuanaNews.com – or welcome back.

MarijuanaNews.com will be ten years old
later this month, so there are thousands of articles here
dating back to 1997.
(There were a few interruptions
along the way, one of which was over a
year.)

Why MarijuanaNews.com?

MarijuanaNews.com is
focused the cannabis issues, medical, hemp, and personal
use, but it is inevitably set in the context of the drug
war and the global political
situation.

There are many excellent
anti-prohibitionist websites today, which is one reason that
MarijuanaNews.com kept evolving over the years. Today, it has
two unique features.

First, its large archives
are a record of the changes in the way the issue has been
treated or neglected by the media.  One of the oddities
of my job is that I spend a lot of time reading things that I
disagree with, and I want everyone to know what the
prohibitionists are really saying. I quote them at length in
context and provide links to their websites. This is not
unique to MarijuanaNews, of course. It is the fundamental
difference between us and the enemies of freedom.

Second, for better or for
worse, it reflects my own views, based on decades of writing
on the subject. Obviously, I hope you find that useful. "To
get understanding" is the conceit of punditry. That
is why I made "Freedom has nothing to fear from the
truth
" the motto of this website to remind everyone,
including our own side, that the truth is our first
obligation

The oldest article here,
which actually predates the site by eleven years, is HOW THE NARCS CREATED CRACK,
and was originally published in the National
Review
Magazine on December 5,
1986.

This article has been
cited in scholarly journals as the origin of the economics of
contraband as applied to "drugs", which I called  "The Iron Law
of Prohibition" – the harder the enforcement the harder the
drugs.

I was greatly flattered
when several obituaries of the late Milton Friedman attributed
it to him. (He phoned me when I became National Director of
NORML in 1992, and strongly backed our
efforts.)

The point is not that I am
responsible for the idea, but that I have a
responsibility to the idea
. The "drugwar" is not just
a "failure", but rather a counterproductive fraud that is making all
of the problems of governance and public health much worse. It
is a moral and economic absurdity.
Over the years, I have written
follow-up pieces on MarijuanaNews.com, such as this from
2005:
Meth and
Marijuana. Now: How the Narks Created Crank in Canada. The
Iron Law of Drug Prohibition. The Inescapable Economics Of
Contraband.

The one constant theme of
MarijuanaNews.com has always been
Media
Criticism

and that “the best two-word explanation for marijuana
prohibition is ‘bad
journalism
.’”

From 1998
see

Marijuana
Prohibition, Media Criticism, Copyrights and the
8th and 9th
Commandments.

and from last month
see
The LA Times
Ignores the NORML Conference and the Violence All Around
Them. There Are None So Blind As Editors Who Don’t Want To
See.

The best way to find what you
need on the site is to use the
Search! function and index pages which are on
the right side of every page.

The Chronological
Index
page is a
large file which will be slow to load on dial up but fast on
cable or
DSL. It has a complete list
of all the articles and you might use your browsers "Find"
feature (Control F on the Internet Explorer) to look for key
words in the titles, but the titles don’t have every
topic.

There is also a F.A.Q’s link that has been here from the
beginning and deals with the major questions. The more things
change; the more they stay the same. The prohibitionist rarely
come up with a new lie.

Of course, Medical
Marijuana

has always been a major
focus.

For example,
Medical
Marijuana Endgame: "‘So go ahead and die.’ That would be all
right?" "Congress has made that value judgment." Not Really,
But The Bush Administration Has. The American People Have
Not!

and from 2000, but still
sadly relevant

California Narks
Lie to Justify Disobeying Prop 215. And They Lie About Me In
The Process.

And there are stories that
you will not read anywhere else,

such
as
The Drug War Is
Politics By Other Means: Blackwater Gets Billions to Fight
“Narco-Terorism”. Buying Constituencies for the Drug War.
Analysis by Richard Cowan

and

The Murder of
Robin Prosser. An Indictment of Karen Tandy and Motorola –
By Their Own Words and
Standards.

Perhaps the article that
best describes my view on prohibition is this one from
2000: The Theory and
Practice of Chaos – Analysis By Richard
Cowan

And the article that best
describes my relationship with cannabis and the marijuana
reform movement is
My version of
“Because I got high….” By Richard Cowan

On a more practical
level, RedAphid.com is helping
me reorganize the site to make it easier to use,
and widen its appeal.

In the meantime, I need your
help.

First and foremost, please spread the
word. The purpose of this site has always been to prove that
the truth will make us free – in my lifetime. (I’m still here
and we really are winning, but I am getting older and the
narks are getting meaner, so
hurry!)

Tell your friends about
MarijuanaNews.com and cite it in letters to the editor,
etc.

If you are in a position to give
financial support, it would be greatly appreciated. Hence the
lovely PayPal button. (If you would prefer an older method,
email me and I will send you my snail mail
address.)

You may notice that there
are no Google Adsense ads, because MarijuanaNews.com is about
“illegal drugs.” We are going to be seeking advertising
support from the cannabis industries, but freedom really isn’t
free, so please do what you can.

(We need a new laptop, and
video and still cameras, and food and other
luxuries.)

This Users’ Guide will be
updated from time to time and the site will be updated several
times a week, so check back often.

And please let me know
what you think.

Sincerely,

Richard Cowan
